How
I became a drummer at age 55
Connie Kiewel
Drum set
Why
would a 55-year-old woman take up the drums? For me
it was because I very much wanted to be part of the
Praise Team at my church. Singing is not my forte, and
piano lessons were a distant memory from my youth.
When I retired as a communications manager at Boeing,
I had much to fill my time – volunteer work, church,
golf, daily aerobics, children and grandchildren. But
I was missing that element of music that I longed for.
I wanted to join my husband, who sings and plays guitar
with the church Praise Team. I’ve been fascinated
with drums for years, so I decided to give it a shot.
Timm Gaughan of Creative Rhythm School was very supportive
when I told him my goal was to play with our Praise
Team. He taught in an accelerated manner which is good
for me, given my “mature stature.” After
a little more than a year of weekly lessons, and lots
and lots of practice time, I reached my goal of playing
with the church praise team. It is wonderful!
Timm Gaughan’s curriculum really gets to the heart
of what drumming is about. I get a kick out of “jamming”
to the rock ‘n roll oldies, hitting milestones,
and being able to participate musically at church. I
am incredibly blessed.
Connie is a Fast Track Drums Book 1 course
graduate. Well done!

My
name is Josh and I have tried taking drums previously
but couldn’t make it work. My favorite instrument
was and always will be the drums. I have been almost
completely deaf in both ears and I think the reason
I’ve liked the drums was because I could actually
hear them. I’m fourteen right now and since September
first of 2006, I have normal hearing in both ears with
the help of a very risky surgery and God. To continue
my drum lessons, me and my family decided that we needed
something professional and with good instruction. We
looked for some drum instructors and we found Timm Gaughn.
His “school” sounded both instructional
and professional, PLUS it sounded flat out FUN. I have
been playing drums with Timm for almost two years now
and I have come so far in my books with his instruction.
I
will be going to High School next year and I will still
take lessons from Timm but it will be a lot easier to
play in the band.
I also plan on somehow starting my own band. With the
“grooving out” we do in drums after practice,
it will teach me how to become a much better player
in my band. I will be able to play anything I need right
then as I need it. Timm has taught me to play every
part of the drum set with ease and I’m still perfecting
it! All the credit goes to Timm Gaughn for my drum abilities.

drums for his whole life, and every time my family and
i would go down to visit his family i would go play
on his set. i have reached many goals. I remember when
i first started. I was pretty bad. But Timm worked with
me and i have gotten a lot better over the past year
or so. The drum set I have is a CB 5 piece.
The music i like is punk rock, metal, and classic rock.
My mom and dad think i have progressed a lot. they like
how its going.

Drums Set
Josh
is your average 10 year old 4th grader at Mulvane Grade
school. He keeps a messy bedroom and plays a mean game
of Fooseball. About a year and a half ago he asked if
he could learn to play the drums. It did not take him
long to learn to read the scores and translate that
to the drum set.
We
had no idea were to find a drumming teacher. Just our
luck, a very nice man struck up a conversation with
us in the store as we were buying Josh’s set.
He mentioned that he was starting up drumming classes
and we called him later. Thanks, Tim!
Originally
Josh only wanted to play at home for himself. He did
not see the enjoyment of being able to play with and
for other people. He has just recently crossed the line
by wanting to play with the Mulvane Christian Church
Junior High Praise Band and performing a solo for his
4th grade class.
Right
now, Josh’s only concern is to have fun with drumming
and get better at playing with his Praise Band.

Bass Guitar
Hey
my name is Taylor and I’m 11 years old. I play
the bass guitar and I’ve started from scratch.
I didn’t know how to play at all. Now I I’ve
been taking lessons and playing bass for about 8 eight
months with Timm at the Creative Rhythm School. I started
to play bass December 2007. I got started just because
I loved the sound of bass. Then I told my parents and
I got a bass guitar for Christmas. Then I got signed
up for lessons where my brother Will takes lessons on
drum set and with the same teacher. Because of taking
lesson at the Creative Rhythm School I and my brother
have started a band and we can ROCK OUT thanks to Timm
and the Creative Rhythm School

Hey!
My name is Will and I love to play the drums. The reason
I started is because I wanted to become a better drum
player. I could play before but I knew I wasn’t
playing at my full potential. The real reason I wanted
to take lessons is because I couldn’t stay interested
but taking lessons really got me interested. I met Timm
because he ordered shirts from my moms t-shirt shop.
I mentioned that I was playing the drums and he said
that he was starting a drum class. My parents said that
I have improved very much. Now I plan on starting a
band this summer with my brother that plays the bass
guitar and my two friends Josh and Levi who both play
the guitar. Before with other lessons I haven’t
learned much but having to practice other then at lessons
has really made my drumming ability improve.
Thank you to Timm for teaching me and my parents for
letting me become a drummer.

Nathan Melton
Electric
Guitar
Hi,
my name is Nathan. I am 11 years old. I go to school
at Derby SGC, and I play the guitar. I have been playing
the guitar for 12 weeks then had a break. After the
break I started up again for about 4 weeks now.
The reason I started the guitar was because lots of
my friends play it and I want to be in a band. My friends
started a band and I thought it would be cool to be
in a band with my brother. My brother use to play drums.
He stopped playing 4 weeks after I took a break.
The guitars I have are a blue Johnson acoustic, and
a white Fender Stratocaster electric guitar.
The music I like is rock, classic rock and pop. I have
enjoyed playing guitar with Timm. My parents and I think
that I have progressed a lot.

Tanner is a 9 year old drummer at CRS. He has been taking
lessons for 8 months now. He has a lot of fun he said.
”I like playing drums because it is fun and you
make lots of noise. I play soccer it is fun also. Drums
are very fun! Timm and CRS has taught me how to: hold
my sticks, parts of the drum set, parts of the cymbals,
use a metronome, read notes and rhythms hit the cymbals,
bass drum, snare, hi hats, play with all four body parts
at once, over 34 grooves, play 22 songs from the Fasttrack
drum book, play along with a full band, and my parents
bought me a new drum set after seeing my progress in
my playing drum set.”

at CRS in September 2007. So far he has learned the
parts of the guitar, how to tune the guitar, to hold
the guitar and how to read rhythms and music notation.
He knows all his notes and the staff and clefs. He can
play three songs with his play along CD band tracks.

I
am 14 years old and play drums at CRS. I have been playing
drums for 4 months and love to play along with AC-DC
play-along CDS at home and my lessons at CRS.
It’s been fun; I used to suck at drums. But now
I can actually play the drums. I learned how to: read
rhythms and drum music, how to hold drum sticks, play
along with 26 full band tracks and can play 5 five AC/DC
songs all this in only 9 months!

I have always loved listening to the drums being played,
but never considered learning how to play them myself
until recently. A good friend of mine is a drum student
of Timm's and she recommended I meet with him to explore
the possibility of taking up the drums. I am so glad
she encouraged me to take lessons from Timm because
playing the drums has enriched my life immensely! At
my first lesson, Timm and I discussed my goals and with
Timm's guidance and support I am well on my way to achieving
those goals. Timm's style of teaching is one of encouragement
partnered with practical steps that make learning fun.
The tools Timm has provided, like the Warm-Up &
Metronome CD and the Rock & Funk Groove Course are
excellent tools that assist me in practice time. I actually
enjoy practicing! I look forward to my lessons each
week, especially the time in the lesson where we jam.
I highly recommend Timm and Creative Rhythm School!
Also
at my first lesson with Timm at CRS I expressed my interest
in learning the drum part to the song "Crazy Little
Thing Called Love" by Queen. Since I had never
played drums before, I thought it would be several months
before I would be capable of learning the song. But
right away, Timm spent time helping me learn the rhythm
and then moved on to learning the fills once I was comfortable
holding the beat. Learning to play the song this way
made a lot of sense to me and enabled me to learn it
quickly. I feel a great sense of accomplishment being
able to play this song so early in my drumming and appreciate
the teaching style CRS and Timm offers.
